Safety
- Ensure the console is completely powered off and disconnected from any charger before beginning disassembly.
- Handle delicate ribbon cables and ZIF connectors gently to avoid snapping the locking flaps or tearing flex cables.
- Keep track of all small screws and electronic components on an anti-static mat.

Step-by-step

Power Off and Remove Stylus
1 minEnsure the Nintendo 3DS XL is completely powered down. Slide the stylus out of its storage slot on the side of the console.

Loosen Battery Cover Screws
2 minUse a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the two captive screws along the top edge of the battery cover.

Remove Battery Cover
2 minInsert a spudger into the pry notches on the side of the casing and lift the cover off the device.

Extract Battery
1 minPry the battery upward from the recess at its bottom edge and set it aside.

Unscrew Lower Housing
4 minRemove the four exposed Phillips #00 screws on the rear casing and pry off the two rubber feet near the hinge to remove the two hidden screws.

Separate Lower Housing
2 minGently lift the lower housing away from the console, opening it slowly from the lower edge.

Disconnect Shoulder Button Ribbons
3 minUse precision tweezers to carefully pull the L and R shoulder button ribbon cable connectors straight up off the motherboard.

Unscrew Circle Pad Assembly
2 minRemove the two Phillips #00 screws securing the Circle Pad bracket on the upper-left corner of the motherboard.

Disconnect Joystick Ribbon Cable
2 minUse a spudger to gently flip open the dark retaining flap on the Circle Pad ZIF connector and slide the ribbon cable out.

Install Replacement Circle Pad
3 minSlide the ribbon cable of the new Circle Pad module into the ZIF connector and snap the locking flap down to secure it.

Secure Joystick Assembly
2 minAlign the replacement Circle Pad module over its mounting posts and reinstall the two Phillips #00 screws.

Reconnect Shoulder Cables
3 minAlign and gently press the L and R shoulder button ribbon connectors back onto their corresponding motherboard sockets.

Reattach Lower Housing
4 minAlign the lower housing over the body, press along the edges until it snaps flat, and reinstall the six housing screws.

Reinstall Battery and Outer Cover
2 minInsert the battery into its compartment, snap the battery cover back into place, and tighten the two captive screws.
