Step-by-step

Peel off the rear sticker covers
2 minUse a pair of tweezers to gently peel back the two tamper-evident stickers on the back of the console to reveal the hidden screws.

Remove the rear enclosure screws
3 minUse a TR8 Torx Security screwdriver to remove the two 10 mm screws securing the outer housing.

Slide off the outer bottom shell
2 minSlide the bottom plastic panel backward slightly and lift it up to release the locking tabs from the main chassis.

Lift away the main outer case
2 minPull the white outer enclosure straight up and away from the internal metal frame.

8 minUse a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove the 7 green screws and 23 silver screws securing the metal inner frame.

Detach the front power button board cable
2 minUse a spudger to carefully lift the locking latch and disconnect the power button ribbon cable from the motherboard.

3 minUnscrew the two T8 Torx screws holding the power button board to the metal shield and lift the board out.

Lift off the upper metal shield
2 minGently lift the top sheet metal panel off the assembly to expose the power supply and fan.

2 minSqueeze the locking tab on the power supply connector and pull it straight out of the motherboard.

Unplug the cooling fan cable
2 minUse a spudger to disconnect the 4-pin fan connector from the motherboard header.

2 minLift the large black cooling fan directly up and out of the internal metal bracket.

Inspect the motherboard drive interface
4 minNote that the Xbox Series S is an all-digital console without an internal optical disc drive. Inspect the board for debris or corrosion near the expansion and USB data lines.

Clean the rear USB ports
3 minApply 99% isopropyl alcohol to a cotton swab and gently clean the interior contacts of the external USB ports used for external optical drives.

Reinstall the cooling fan and power supply
5 minLower the fan and power supply back into their chassis cutouts and firmly reattach their cable connectors.

Reattach the outer housing
