Step-by-step

Remove battery cover and batteries
1 minSlide the battery cover off the back of the controller and remove the AA batteries. Set them aside in a safe place.

Pry off left handle grip
2 minInsert a plastic opening tool into the seam along the left handle grip. Pry gently along the edge until the plastic panel releases.

Pry off right handle grip
2 minInsert the plastic opening tool into the seam on the right handle grip. Pry along the plastic edge to unclip and remove the grip panel.

Puncture battery compartment label
1 minPress the tip of a spudger through the center of the label inside the battery cavity. Locate the hidden security screw underneath.

Remove outer handle screws
2 minUse a T8 Security Torx screwdriver to remove the four screws exposed on the outer handle frames.

Remove center security screw
1 minUnscrew the single T8 Security Torx screw located inside the battery compartment.

Lift off front faceplate
1 minLift the front faceplate shell straight up off the controller assembly and place it aside.

Remove rear housing shell
1 minPull the rear housing shell off the inner chassis and set it aside.

Pull off thumbstick caps
1 minGrasp the rubber thumbstick caps firmly and pull them straight off the potentiometer shafts.

Unscrew top motherboard
2 minUse a T6 Torx screwdriver to remove the two screws securing the upper circuit board.

Desolder rumble motor wires
4 minHeat the solder joints with a soldering iron to disconnect the red and black wires connecting the motors to the board.

Separate upper motherboard
2 minGently pull the top motherboard straight up to disconnect it from the lower motherboard interconnect pins.

Unscrew lower motherboard
2 minRemove the remaining T6 Torx screws holding the lower circuit board to the inner plastic frame.

Clean thumbstick potentiometers
3 minDip a cotton swab in 99% isopropyl alcohol and thoroughly clean debris out of the analog stick potentiometers.
