Before you begin
Tools

Step-by-step

Remove the front faceplate
1 minGently pull the faceplate away from the front of the console starting at the USB door recess.

Detach the top ventilation grill
3 minInsert a spudger into the ventilation holes along the top edge to release the hidden plastic tabs.

Remove the bottom ventilation grill
3 minPry open the locking clips through the vent holes on the bottom side using a small flathead or spudger.

Unclip the rear casing latches
4 minUse an opening tool or paperclip to press into the small latch slots on the rear of the console until they pop open.

Separate the top outer case
2 minLift the upper plastic shell off the lower chassis to expose the internal metal cage.

Unscrew the RF board
2 minRemove the three Torx T8 screws securing the front power and RF module board, then pull it straight off.

Disconnect the optical DVD drive
2 minLift the rear of the DVD drive and disconnect both the power cable and the SATA cable from the motherboard.

Remove the plastic fan shroud
1 minGrasp the white plastic air duct and lift it straight up off the dual heatsinks.

Unplug the dual cooling fans
2 minDisconnect the fan power connector from the motherboard and slide the fan assembly out of the metal frame.

Remove chassis securing screws
4 minUse a Torx T10 driver to remove all silver and black screws holding the metal inner case to the motherboard.

Lift out the motherboard
3 minCarefully tilt and lift the motherboard out of the lower metal chassis by handling it along the edges.

Pry off the heatsink X-clamps
5 minUse a small flathead screwdriver to gently leverage each leg of the X-clamps off the motherboard mounting posts.

Clean off dried thermal paste
4 minWipe away the old thermal compound from the CPU, GPU, and heatsink surfaces using isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth.

Inspect and replace faulty capacitors
10 minCheck for bulging or leaking capacitors near the power VRMs and solder fresh replacements if damaged.

Apply fresh thermal paste
3 minPlace a small pea-sized dot of thermal compound onto the center of both the CPU and GPU dies before reinstalling the heatsinks.
