Before you begin
Tools
- T10 Torx screwdriver
- Phillips #1 screwdriver
- Spudger or plastic opening tool
- Xbox 360 unlock tool
- Tweezers
- Cotton swabs

- Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher)
- Silicone grease
Safety
- Unplug the power supply cable completely from the wall outlet and console before beginning disassembly.
- Do not touch the optical laser lens directly with your bare fingers to prevent oil contamination.
- Wear an anti-static wrist strap to prevent electrostatic discharge damage to internal components.

Step-by-step

Pull off the front faceplate
1 minFirmly grip the front faceplate near the USB door cutout and pull it straight away from the console.

Detach the top ventilation grate
2 minInsert a spudger into the securing plastic clips along the top vent edges and pry the grate off.

Remove the bottom ventilation grate
2 minPry up the edges of the bottom ventilation grate using a plastic opening tool to release its retaining tabs.

Release the rear casing latches
3 minInsert an Xbox 360 unlock tool or small precision flathead screwdriver into each rear latch slot until they snap open.

Separate the outer plastic housing
2 minGently pull the top and bottom half-shells apart and set the plastic outer casing aside.

Remove the T10 chassis screws
3 minUse a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove the six long silver screws securing the metal case halves together.

Lift off the upper metal case
1 minFlip the console back over and lift the top metal shielding straight off the internal assembly.

Disconnect the disc drive cables
2 minUnplug both the SATA data cable and power cable from the rear ports of the optical disc drive.

Lift out the optical disc drive
1 minLift the optical disc drive straight up out of the metal chassis sub-frame.

Remove the disc drive casing screws
2 minTurn the optical drive over and use a Phillips #1 screwdriver to remove the four corner screws on the metal lid.

Open the optical drive lid
1 minLift the top metal lid off the disc drive casing to expose the tray mechanism and laser optic assembly.

Replace the rubber drive belt
3 minUse tweezers to pull off the worn rubber drive belt from the tray motor pulleys and stretch the new belt into place.

Clean the optical laser lens
2 minGently wipe the glass laser lens using a cotton swab lightly dampened with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol.

Reinstall the disc drive casing
2 minPlace the upper metal drive cover back onto the assembly and secure it using the four Phillips screws.

Reconnect and seat the disc drive
2 minLower the drive into the internal metal frame and firmly plug in the rear SATA and power cables.

Power the Xbox 360 back on and test the disc drive repair function before you put every screw away. Check touch/display response, charging, cameras, buttons, and wireless as relevant to this repair.
