Step-by-step

Remove the hard drive door
2 minPress the release latch on the right side of the console to open the hard drive door. Pull the fabric tab to remove the internal hard drive if present.

Unclip the top vent
3 minInsert a plastic opening tool under the edge of the top vent grill. Pry gently along the perimeter to release the plastic locking tabs.

Remove the bottom vent
3 minUse a spudger to release the retaining clips holding the bottom vent grill in place. Lift the grill off the console once all clips detach.

Release the left side panel tabs
4 minLocate the small locking tabs visible through the side vent slots. Insert a thin opening tool into each slot to pop the side panel free.

Separate the outer plastic casing
4 minGently pull the top and bottom halves of the plastic shell apart. Work your way around the edges until the outer casing completely detaches.

Detach the front faceplate ribbon cable
3 minUnclip the front panel module from the frame. Carefully disconnect the delicate power ribbon cable from the motherboard connector.

Remove the Wi-Fi card
2 minUnscrew the single Torx T8 screw securing the Wi-Fi module to the chassis. Pull the module straight out of its slot.

Remove the chassis assembly screws
4 minUse a Torx T10 screwdriver to remove the five long silver screws holding the metal case together.

Lift off the top metal cover
2 minLift the upper metal shield straight up away from the internal components and set it aside.

Disconnect the disc drive cables
2 minUnplug the SATA data cable and power cable from the rear of the optical disc drive.

Lift out the optical disc drive
2 minGently lift the disc drive assembly straight out of the console chassis.

Remove the drive housing screws
3 minTurn the optical drive upside down and remove the four screws holding the bottom metal plate.

Replace the drive belt
4 minUse fine tweezers to remove the stretched drive belt from the drive tray pulleys. Install a new rubber drive belt around both pulleys.

Clean the laser lens
3 minMoisten a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol and gently wipe the optical laser lens in a circular motion. Dry it gently with a dry swab tip.

Reassemble the disc drive cover
3 minPlace the bottom metal plate back onto the optical drive housing and tighten the four casing screws.
