Step-by-step
- 1
Remove the hard drive door
1 minSlide the latch on the right side of the console to release the hard drive cover. Pull the plastic cover off the housing.

Pull out the hard drive
1 minGrasp the fabric pull-tab attached to the hard drive enclosure. Firmly pull to slide the hard drive out of its bay.

Pry off the top vent panel
3 minInsert a spudger into the seam along the top ventilation grille. Gently pry upward around the edges to release the retaining clips.

Remove the bottom vent panel
3 minInsert a spudger between the bottom vent panel and outer casing. Pry along the perimeter until all plastic tabs detach.

Unclip the front bezel
4 minUse a plastic opening tool to unhook the plastic latches along the top and bottom of the front faceplate. Pull the bezel away from the chassis.

Detach the outer plastic housing
5 minRelease the locking tabs along the rear seam using a flathead driver or spudger. Lift the outer top shell away from the inner metal frame.

Remove the Wi-Fi module screw
2 minUse a Torx T10 screwdriver to remove the single screw securing the Wi-Fi module. Pull the module straight out from its slot.

Unscrew the RF board assembly
2 minRemove the two Torx T8 screws holding the power button RF board to the front frame. Pull the board forward to disconnect it from the motherboard.

Remove the metal frame screws
5 minUse a Torx T10 screwdriver to remove the long screws securing the upper metal cage shield to the lower chassis.

Lift off the upper metal shield
2 minGrasp the edges of the upper metal cage and lift it straight off the console to expose internal components.

Disconnect the optical drive cables
2 minUnplug the power and SATA data cables connected to the rear of the optical disc drive.

Remove the optical disc drive
2 minLift the optical disc drive assembly straight up and out of the metal chassis frame.

Unscrew the motherboard fasteners
4 minRemove the short silver Torx T8 screws holding the motherboard to the bottom metal casing.

Remove the motherboard from the chassis
3 minLift the front edge of the motherboard and slide it forward slightly to clear the rear I/O connectors from the metal housing.

Perform motherboard solder repair
15 minInspect damaged components, capacitors, or broken traces under magnification. Apply flux and use a soldering iron to reflow or solder target connections.
